Why currencies move

A currency is a claim on an economy, and its price against another currency moves on the same three questions every time: what do you earn for holding it, is the economy behind it getting stronger or weaker, and what happens to it when markets get scared. Every headline you will ever read about forex is one of those three in disguise.

This lesson walks through each force with one clean example — the dollar in a hiking cycle, the euro in a growth surprise, the yen on a risk-off day — so the rest of the course has somewhere to hang.

Key takeaways

Three forces do most of the work: yield, growth and safety
A headline is noise until you can name which force it touches
Pairs move on the difference between two currencies, not on one alone

What actually moves a currency

A currency is priced off what its central bank is expected to do next, and the expectation moves before the rate does. That is why the calendar matters more than the level: the level is already in the price.

What the market has already priced is the whole question. A cut everyone is waiting for does nothing on the day it arrives; the move came weeks earlier, when the expectation did.

So the reading is always of two sides at once. A pair is one currency against another, and a rate that is high on its own says nothing until you put the other side of it beside it.

Key takeaways

The expectation moves before the rate does.
A surprise is a distance, not a verdict.
Two currencies make a pair; read both sides.
Positioning explains the move the data cannot.
